After you’ve narrowed down your list of potential restorers, no decision should be made without a visit to their facility. In addition to inspecting work in progress, you want to carefully examine how well the shop is maintained. Dust is a major by-product of sanding and methods should be in place to contain it and dust should not be accumulated in areas where body work is not currently being performed.

Before committing to spending many thousands of dollars you must perform the same careful research that you would if you were making financial investments or buying a home. Your car is decades-old and it can wait a few weeks or months while you select a competent restorer.

Cadillac Restoration: 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz

It wasn’t until the late 1950s that the tail fins of classic Cadillacs reached their peak. Among those big tail fin years, the 1959 stands out more than others. Not only were they the tallest but they were also adorned with the bullet-like tail lights that have been a favorite subject for photographers (from professional to amateur) throughout the years.

Cadillac restoration projects like the highly collectible 1959 Eldorado Biarritz pictured 1959 Cadillac restorationcan fetch impressive prices at auction and the demand only seems to be growing. The argyle blue metallic color of this car is not a common one despite the spectacular way is gleams in all levels of light.

Just 1,320 Cadillacs were built in the Eldorado Biarritz trim and far fewer remain almost sixty years since they were built. The rarity makes it an expensive car to restore but the Cadillac restoration experts of CPR have thirty-three years of Cadillac-specific experience behind them and they’ve restored many of this particular model.

The elaborate grille alone consists of dozens of individual parts and takes hours to assemble. Of course, that intricate design takes the good part of a day just to detail and polish. However, the effort is well worth it.

1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Restoration

CPR’s latest completed Cadillac restoration (video) project, a 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, was Cadillac restoration - delivery dayrecently awarded the prestigious “Senior Wreath” award by the meticulous judges of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club at their 2017 Grand National Meet in McLean, VA.

This iconic car, the last of the big tailfin Cadillacs, came to Cadillac Parts & Restoration all the way from Alabama and was sent from a longtime customer for whom CPR has restored two cars previously.

From the bitterly cold day on which the vehicle arrived at CPR’s Poughkeepsie, NY location right through the completion of its restoration, thousands of hours went into bringing this classic back to “new” condition.

The Eldorado Biarritz model is the most desired of the 1960 Cadillacs (perhaps other than the Eldorado Brougham built by Pininfarina in Turin, Italy) and due to its low production numbers, just 1,285 were built, restoration is made more difficult due to the challenges posed by locating original and satisfactory condition parts. Thankfully, the CPR Cadillac restoration team has been restoring classic Cadillacs since 1984 and have the sources to locate original parts for these rare cars.

Of course, quality work matters as much as originality and the experienced and proud craftsmen settle for nothing but the highest-level of work and use the best possible materials on their cars. The end result is a car that will not only turn heads when driven down the boulevard but also impress the most knowledgeable classic car aficionado – as was the case in McLean, VA when the CLC’s team of trained and expert judges went over the car with a fine toothed comb. They not only examined the interior and exterior from nose to tail but they tested each mechanical and electrical component.

It’s that level of examination that makes Cadillac & LaSalle Club judging so notoriously difficult.

The Senior Wreath award means a lot to the Cadillac Parts & Restoration team. But even more so is the fact that the owner of this car will not just store it away in a climate-controlled garage between shows but will also enjoy driving this classic, top-down.
